Trained as a visual artist, Dr. Ritwij Bhowmik started his studies in painting, at the Govt. College of Art & Craft of Calcutta, where he was awarded with a BFA and later completed MFA (Painting/Art-History) from Visva-Bharati University (Santiniketan).
From 1999 to 2003, he worked with professional Bengali theater group Sudrak as an assistant Costume/Set designer. Post MFA, Dr. Bhowmik started his career as the Discipline In-charge (Applied Art/Fine-Arts) at the Ashok Hall Girls High. Sec. School (Kolkata), where he worked till 2008. In 2008, he obtained the “Chinese Government Scholarship for the Young Artists” from MHRD (Govt. of India) which allowed him to leave for China and to continue his research in the field of Chinese Art, Oil Painting and calligraphy at the Northeast Normal University (China), where he received a PG. Dip. After completion of his education in China, Dr. Bhowmik traveled to Taiwan, where he earned his Doctorate degree from National Chiao-Tung University in Visual-Culture and Film-study. He has exhibited his art works in several national and international art exhibitions in India and abroad. His art works are in collection of many renowned collectors including Gerard Mermoz collection, Art-Trust, Gandhara Art Gallery and several private collectors. He was awarded with prestigious Award Grant by the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation (Canada) in 2005, Golden Bamboo Award by National Chiao-Tung University in 2012 and 2013 and many more. Dr. Bhowmik joined as an Assistant Professor at the Department of HSS, IIT Kanpur in 2013 where he currently teaches Art History, Art Appreciation and Cinema-Study and simultaneously works as a professional painter.
