Born in Udipi, Ramesh Rao (B.1949) , is a self taught artist. His penchant to transcend the obvious and capture minute details is perhaps his greatest success.
He is an eloquent master in creating raw and refined moods denoted by miniscule detailing which form the inner essence of his paintings. His protagonists are real life people –ordinary, humble and unadorned. Be it the beedi smoking villager with a colourful headgear seen huddled together on winter morning or an old man sitting on a chair facing the viewer while his progeny is engaged elsewhere, one cannot but get naturally drawn to the muted suggestions which are so subtly encapsulated.
Ramesh Rao has over 20 exhibitions to his credit, including participation in an exhibition of Johannesburg, Hong Kong and Bangkok. He has won awards from the State Academies of Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. His paintings have been auctioned by Sotheby's and are found in several major collections in India and abroad.
